My football fandom most certainly lies in between World Cup seeding and World Cup Final - any other time, I’m just not interested. It’s not that the game isn’t exciting or entertaining, it’s just never been my cup of tea since my sporting landscape has been dominated by just about every classic American sport since I was old enough to walk. With that being said, I’ve always enjoyed playing the FIFA franchise when it pops up every now and again, which essentially makes me a de facto causal fan. However, this year’s version has really captivated my attention and definitely pushed me in the direction of full-on FIFA fan.
Graphically speaking, FIFA 16 is beautiful. Character models show us a more refined look at the emotions developed so well in FIFA 15. This year offers us a polish to that system as players will offer a sigh or throw their hands up in frustration. Celebrations look organic and natural as players pull off a worthwhile pass or shot. Players clapped or cheered on a through pass that was well placed even if the forward missed the shot or it was saved. Replays do well to highlight the added intensity here. Facial animations have also received a boost and look more akin to their real world models than ever before. Much was made of these animations last year and EA Canada seems to have improved that system.
Two more additions to FIFA 16 are the trainer and off the balls skills. The trainer is an onscreen prompt which helps you learn the controls whilst on the pitch. In theory it is a good idea but the trainer gives you very basic instructions such as long pass and slide tackle. Having spent a few minutes playing the game, you would’ve learned these skills anyway therefore the trainer is rendered ineffectual. Off the ball skills allow you to use your body to fool opponents without touching the ball. When it works it feels great but against the computer opponent, especially on higher difficulties, it rarely pays off.
Get ready for better skill moves, more exciting goals, more responsive controls, smarter teammates, and improved animations as you play the match. Plus, now it’s even easier to play like a pro with Enhanced Hybrid Controls that let you use Gestures or Buttons to control the ball. Gain improved offside awareness and more with Attacking Intelligence, then blow past defenders with ease. Alternatively choose to simulate matches, taking the manager position on the side of the pitch. Also, for the first time on mobile, you can trigger unique player celebrations on the pitch after you score!
Earn, trade, and transfer superstars like Lionel Messi, Jordan Henderson, and Juan Cuadrado to create your own fantasy team. Choose your play style, formation, kits, and more, then balance player chemistry for the strongest squad compositions. While not a big deviation from last year’s entry, FIFA 16 does feature some nice tweaks: much-improved player models (especially the faces), better integration of the virtual buttons and gesture controls, and an array of new skill moves and post-goal celebrations. There’s plenty of opportunity to spend money on packs and cards, which can be tempting-but whether you invest or not, the core game is really strong.
