From our limited hands-on time shooting and goaltending felt largely the same. The same scoring tactics from last year – wraparounds, screens, high slot shots – all seemed to still work. I do, however, believe that the most hardcore of NHL fans will turn the indicators off almost immediately. They can be a bit distracting at first, but once you get used to them they’re not too bad at all. Those who’ve put hundreds if not thousands of hours into the recent games won’t need them, though, and may quickly become annoyed by their existence. In all, NHL 16’s modes include Play Now, Be a Pro, Be a GM, Season Mode, Practice Mode, Playoff Mode, NHL Moments Live, Hockey Ultimate Team, EA Sports Hockey League, Online Team Play, and Online Versus.

From what you do, to how you do it, NHL 16 makes every position on the ice meaningful to team success; with innovation on offense and defense, players have new tools to not only score goals, but to prevent them as well. Precision Skating makes refined movements possible in any situation and Seamless Puck Pickups allow the ability to quickly control a pass or corral a loose puck. NHL 16 also introduces the all new On-Ice Visual Trainer and smarter Coach Feedback; both tools will teach new players how to learn the fundamentals and give returning players tips on how to build on their NHL skills. All this comes to life with distinct arena atmospheres, the most realistic players – and their playoff beards – and a story-driven commentary package of Doc Emrick, Eddie Olczyk and Ray Ferraro to pull fans into the energy of the game like never before.

EA Sports Hockey League is returning this September when the game hits the Xbox One and PS4 consoles. EA will be well aware of how important a year this is for their NHL series. Much improved graphics, new broadcast presentations and the series’ best gameplay to date, should have made NHL 16 the true next-gen experience for hockey gamers. Instead, the fans turned their backs and started a social media backlash, as it emerged that many important features had been stripped from the game.
So far, NHL 16 looks to be heading in a great direction, which is key to try and win back the lost fans from the debacle of last years launch. Quite a few members of the community have had a chance to give feedback and get some hands on time with an early bid of the game, these guys know the NHL series inside and out, much like I do, and they have come away very pleased with what they have seen so far. Obviously the game is still 4 months out, and many things can and will change, but keep it locked to 3GEM as more info is revealed at this year’s E3 and beyond. NHL 16 is set to release on Sept. 25.
