During the summer months, all the major clubs travel around the world in preparation for the upcoming season. In FIFA 16, we are introducing this key development period to Career Mode. Prior to a given season, your club will be invited to three out of a possible nine tournaments, played in Asia, Europe, Latin America, or North America. Just as with real football clubs, these matches will be a great opportunity to work on your team tactics and line-ups before the start of the regular season - use all your subs to test squad players. The prize purse from these tournaments gets allocated to your transfer budget for the upcoming season.
No matter what kind of team you manage, whether it be a financial powerhouse like PSG, or financially devoid Accrington Stanley, pre-season tournaments will give you an extra bump in available funds. Obviously, always pick the tournament with the highest amount of winnings. Make sure you do well in the tournament, or you’ll get barely anything. With FIFA 16's Player Training in career mode, you can turn any youngster into an easy £10m. What you are looking for is a young player you can train in your club. A “promising player” symbol for a player is a great added bonus as they will grow quicker. By the end of the first season, they would have grown a lot and you can sell them for much higher than you could have otherwise.
The Scouts in FIFA 16 have certain ratings on quality. The better the Scout is, the better the results can be. You can find certain types of players or specify attributes. Of course, you can let the Scouts in FIFA 16 just generally looking for young talents. When you find youth players with great potential, you can get him in the club. Furthermore, the nationality of your Scout also plays a role. If you let a Scout work in his home country, then the results are always better than if he's sent to a foreign country in search of young players. Overall, the Youth Academy is an important element in career mode. This year Lyon have been struggling in the league but on FIFA they really could be one of the best teams to play with. Alexandre Lacazette and Nabil Fekir amongst others have both received boosts whilst Mathieu Valbuena, Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Rafel have all arrived over the summer.
As ever the team have a lot of players with a lot of potential, the one to really keep your eye on is Maxwel Cornet. In FIFA 16, there are a couple of ways to find young talent which you’ll be able to choose and grow in the game. The first way is – as mentioned above – using scouts. Although always getting your desired players is not 100% guaranteed, it’s still a good idea. Another thing that you need to consider is the game’s new training system which allows you to train 5 players at the same time and increase their attributes. However, you should consider players’ age and shape of a player before putting them to training or it’ll all be a lost cause. One more thing to bear in mind is higher an attribute, the harder it will be to develop that particular attribute.
In my experience, making signings that I think could happen in real life was the most fun I got from my career mode. I’ve never signed Neymar at Spurs in my first season or anything like that. However, the mark of a good manager is his ability to turn a profit from the good form of his players, sell them, and purchase a player he thinks will fit well in that empty position. For example, in my Spurs career, if Kane scores 25 goals in season 1 and I sell him for £45 million, I’m not going to go out and buy Diego Costa. You’ve got to buy a player who will fit well in the vacancy, but never go overboard.
